SACME Spring Meeting Recap
Charles Willis presents a Poster at the SACME Spring Meeting, Thursday, April 30, 2015
Charles Willis, Director of Continuing Education at the Annenberg Center, and I attended the Society of Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME) meeting April 29 – May 3, 2015, in Tampa, FL. The meeting was held at the impressive University of South Florida Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS).
Annenberg Center Board Member, Dr. Barbara Barnes gave a presentation on structuring health professional education as a service line. This innovative approach meets the needs of students, trainees and practitioners across all health professional disciplines. This approach is unique to her organization’s structure at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and serves as a potential model for other academic medical centers to follow.
The Annenberg Center also had a poster accepted for the conference and Charles Willis’ presentation was very well received. The poster highlighted one of our activities that used a virtual patient simulator to help physicians treat and manage patients with COPD.
Other highlights include a presentation by Dr. Peter Fabri of the University of South Florida who has created a new degree program in health care engineering combining both medicine and industrial engineering with a goal to “fix” the healthcare system; and Graham McMahon, MD, the new President and CEO of the ACCME addressed the group via videoconference. I found him very humble, engaging and open to dialogue — in short, very refreshing.
