19th Surgeon General Murthy on the Gun Violence Epidemic

Source: Aspen Institute Ideas Festival, Spotlight Health held June 22-25, 2017

Overview

Bullets rang out on a Washington baseball field, injuring Congressman Steve Scalise and four others and resulting in the death of the shooter. For a moment, the nation stood united in shock. Could our shared sorrow inspire a consensus that gun violence should be tackled as a public health issue? Can we agree that -- when more than 100,000 people are shot every year in the United States, and almost 32,000 of them die -- we have an unruly epidemic on our hands? In conversation with PBS’s Judy Woodruff, 19th U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy takes on a national crisis with a public health physician’s thoughtful perspective.
